Personade

Slack app for birthdays and work anniversaries

Everyone hears their own name,
on their own day.

Personade is a Slack app for birthdays, work anniversaries and first days. One person records three short videos, once. Every celebration after that arrives on its own, with that person’s name spoken aloud in the recording.

Nobody else has to install anything. That is rather the point.

One recording each

Same take. Different name, every time.

Sample messages. Three people, three occasions, three recordings between the whole company.

The three current options

A cake emoji in a channel is worse than saying nothing

It proves someone had a reminder, not that anyone was thinking about you.

The spreadsheet

Someone keeps the dates. They remember on the morning, then chase a founder who is in back-to-back calls. It works until the person who owns the spreadsheet is on holiday.

The bot

Posts a cake emoji and an @mention into a channel. Everybody knows a robot wrote it, including the person it is addressed to.

The good intention

The founder means to record something personal for everyone. And does, genuinely, for the first three people.

Setup

How it works: three recordings, then nothing for a year

01

Record three videos

One for birthdays, one for work anniversaries, one for a first day. Thirty seconds each, filmed on a laptop by whoever the message should come from. That is the setup, and you do not do it again.

02

We pick up the dates

Work anniversaries come straight from Slack profiles. Slack has no birthday field, so those are typed in once, or read automatically if your workspace already has a date field for them.

03

Everyone gets their own

At 9am in their own timezone, on their own day. A private message by default, or posted in a channel if you would rather the team saw it.

What do I even say

Three scripts. Read them out, or write your own.

This is the part people worry about, and it is the smallest part. Thirty seconds is four sentences. Below is what we would say.

Birthday

24 seconds

Hey Sarah. It is your birthday, so I wanted to say something properly rather than let the day go past with a message in a channel.

Thank you for the work you have been doing. I hope you get to stop at some point today and do something that has nothing to do with us.

Have a good one.

Work anniversary

26 seconds

Hey Sarah. It is your work anniversary today, which means you have put up with us for another whole year.

I remember what this place looked like when you joined, and it is not what it looks like now. A fair amount of that is you.

Thank you for staying. Here is to the next one.

First day

27 seconds

Hey Sarah. Welcome. It is your first day, and first days are mostly logistics and trying to remember forty names at once.

So this is only to say that we are glad you picked us, and that you should ask anything of anyone, including me.

Nothing is a stupid question in your first month. Really pleased you are here.

The only rule: start by saying a name

Any name will do, because that is the word Personade swaps for each person. Say “Hey Sarah” and everyone hears their own. A recording that opens straight into the message has nothing to swap, so we will ask you for another take.

Before you install it

What Personade can and cannot see in your Slack

It cannot read your messages

Personade holds no permission to read a single message, in any channel, public or private. It can see who is in the workspace, their timezone, and the dates on their own profile. That is the whole list.

Nobody else has to do anything

One person records. Everyone else receives. There is no app for your team to learn, no profile to complete, and nothing anyone has to remember.

Anyone can opt out, for good

One click and they stop receiving anything. An admin cannot put them back in, and they stop counting towards your plan.

Pricing

Priced by headcount, not by video

Every birthday, every anniversary, every new starter is included. Paying yearly costs two months less than paying monthly, and works out at roughly what a card and a cake cost per person.

Questions people ask before installing

Does the leader have to record a video for every person?

No, and that is the whole product. They record one video per occasion, about thirty seconds each. Personade replaces the name in that recording with each person's own, spoken in the same voice, so a hundred people get a hundred videos out of three takes.

Is it really their voice?

It is a clone built from the recording they just made, with their explicit consent, and it does exactly one job: saying the recipient's name in the same voice as the rest of the video. The footage, the room and the delivery are genuinely theirs. Only the name is generated.

What can it see in our Slack?

Who is in the workspace, their timezone, and the dates on their own Slack profile. It has no permission to read messages or files in any channel, and it never asks for one. Work anniversaries come from the standard start date field. Birthdays are typed in, because Slack has no birthday field of its own.

How is this different from a birthday bot?

A bot posts text. This is your founder's face and voice, saying that person's name, on their day. Same automation, completely different thing to receive.

What happens when someone new joins?

Slack tells us, and their welcome video goes out on their first day. Nobody in People Ops has to do anything.

What if someone would rather not get one?

They opt out and it stops, permanently. Guests and contractors are left out by default, and anyone you exclude does not count towards your plan.

Can we see a video before it goes out?

Yes. You can send yourself a full test of any occasion with any name, rendered exactly as a real one would be, before anybody else receives anything.

  • Anyone can opt out
  • Cancel whenever you like

Personade uses AI to clone the recorded voice, with that person’s consent, and to speak each recipient’s name in it. Generated speech can mispronounce an unusual name. Every occasion can be tested on yourself before anyone else receives anything, and the recording itself is always the real person.
