Why most LinkedIn banners lose their best line

Your banner is the widest thing on your profile, and the first thing people see when they click through from an invite. Most banners are designed flat, in a design tool, as a clean 4:1 rectangle. Then LinkedIn drops your profile photo on the bottom left, and the phone app cuts off the sides.

So the line you cared about ends up behind your face, or half off the screen on a phone. Nobody tells you. You only see it when you look at your own profile on your phone, if you ever do.

This banner maker shows you that before you upload. The preview puts the photo where LinkedIn puts it, on desktop and in the app, and lists anything that runs under it or off the edge. By default your words sit in the part both views show. It is free, it needs no account, and your files never leave your browser.

LinkedIn banner size: 1584 x 396 pixels

LinkedIn recommends 1584 x 396 pixels for the banner on a personal profile, which is a 4:1 shape. It takes a JPG or PNG under 8MB. LinkedIn now calls it the cover image on desktop and iPhone, and the background photo on Android, so you will see both names.

Every file this tool makes is exactly 1584 x 396 px, as a PNG. If you tick the 2x box you get 3168 x 792 px, the same shape with twice the pixels, which looks sharper on high-resolution screens. If a file ever comes out over 8MB, we save a JPG instead so it still uploads.

The LinkedIn banner safe zone, on desktop and on phones

LinkedIn does not publish where the profile photo lands, and it moves between desktop and the app. So the covered areas in our preview are our best estimate, built from LinkedIn's layout and several recent measurements, and we lean to the cautious side.

The short version: keep words and logos on the right half, away from the far right edge, and out of the bottom left. That is where the Safe zone setting puts them.

Bottom left: your photo
On desktop a circle about 300 px wide in banner pixels sits over the bottom left. On phones it is bigger and further in.
The sides on phones
The app shows a narrower slice of the banner, so roughly the outer 200 px on each side can go missing.
Not on the banner
Your name, headline and buttons sit under the banner, not on top of it. Only the photo covers it.

LinkedIn banner ideas and examples by role

A good banner says one thing your headline does not have room for. Keep it to a short line and a second line at most. Here is what tends to work, and the template that fits.

Founders
What you build and for whom: "We build Webflow sites that sell". Try Blueprint or Sunrise.
Sales and consultants
The result you get people, with a number if it is true. Try Ledger or Terrazzo.
Open to work
The role, your stack and where you want to work. Try Open road.
Hiring
How many roles, which teams, remote or not, and the careers link. Try Hiring.
Creators
What you post and when, so people know why to follow. Try Deckchair or Night.
Engineers and designers
One plain line about the work you like, and your GitHub or portfolio. Try Night or Horizon.

How to upload your LinkedIn banner

On desktop: click Me at the top of LinkedIn, then View profile. Click the camera icon in your introduction section and upload the file. The file is already the right shape, so leave the crop as it is and click Apply.

On iPhone: tap your profile photo to open your profile, tap the camera icon in the introduction section, upload the file, then tap Save. On Android: open your profile, tap the cover section, tap Change, upload the file, then tap Save.

Then open your profile on your phone once. If anything looks off, come back, move the words and download again.

A good banner gets you looked at. Outreach gets you replies.

People look at your banner when something brings them to your profile: a post, a comment, a connection request. The banner does not start conversations. Reaching out does.

That is what we build. Personade sends your connection requests and follow-ups from your own LinkedIn account, inside safe daily limits, and puts every reply in one inbox. See how LinkedIn sequences work or our pricing: Pro is $49 a month, with 14 days free.

How to make a LinkedIn banner here

  1. Pick a template

10 designs drawn in our own print style: type, illustration, pattern, your photo, and ones made for hiring and open to work.

  2. Write your lines

A headline, a second line and an optional small line for your site or handle. Add your logo or a photo if you like.

  3. Choose colours and a font

9 colour sets, from our sky and coral to plain black, white and stone, and 3 fonts.

  4. Check desktop and phone

Switch views and turn on the covered areas. Anything under the photo or off the edge is listed in plain words.

  5. Download the PNG

    1584 x 396 px, or 3168 x 792 px for sharper screens. Under 8MB, ready for LinkedIn.

  6. Upload it

Me, View profile, the camera icon, upload, Apply. The steps for phones are above.

What this banner maker does, and does not do

  • Everything runs in your browser. Your photo, your logo and your words are never sent to us or stored anywhere.
  • The covered areas are our estimate. LinkedIn does not publish them and can change its layout, so check your profile on a phone after you upload.
  • It makes personal profile banners. Company page covers use a different size and are not built here yet.
  • Fonts are the 3 we use on this site. Typing in Korean switches to a font that has Hangul.
  • LinkedIn opens a crop box when you upload. The file is already 4:1, so there is nothing to crop.
  • It is free with no limit. Nothing runs on our servers, so there is nothing to ration.

1584 x 396 pixels, a 4:1 shape. That is LinkedIn's recommended size for a personal profile banner, also called the cover image or background photo. Every file this tool makes is exactly that size, or 3168 x 792 px if you choose the sharper option.

JPG or PNG, under 8MB, according to LinkedIn Help. We download a PNG. If it ever comes out over 8MB, we save a JPG instead.

The bottom left. On desktop it is a circle about 300 px wide in banner pixels, a little in from the left edge. In the phone app it is bigger and sits further in. LinkedIn does not publish exact positions, so our preview shows our best estimate and leans to the cautious side.

The app shows a narrower slice of the banner, so the far left and right can be cut off, and the photo covers more of what is left. Use the Phone app preview to check before you upload.

Usually because the image was smaller than 1584 x 396 px and LinkedIn stretched it. LinkedIn's own help also suggests a file close to the size limit tends to look better. Our PNG is full size, and the 2x option gives sharp screens more pixels to work with.

Yes. LinkedIn Help now lists the steps for the iPhone and Android apps as well as desktop. Older guides that say you need a computer are out of date.

It is free, with no account and no watermark. The banner is drawn in your browser, and your photo and logo are read from your device and never uploaded to us, so there is nothing for us to keep.

One idea your headline has no room for: what you do and for whom, the result you get people, that you are hiring, or that you are open to work. Keep it to a short line and a second line. Add your website or handle in the small line.

Not yet. Company page covers use a different size and layout. This tool makes banners for personal profiles.
