"If you build it they will come" comes from a baseball film about a cornfield, and founders keep betting their companies on it. A finished product does not create its own demand. People arrive because someone put the product in front of them, again and again, in the places they already were.
Building earns you the right to be seen. It does not do the seeing for you. If nobody is buying your SaaS, the likeliest reason is not that the product is bad. It is that almost nobody has looked at it yet.
Is "if you build it they will come" a startup myth
Yes. The phrase is a misquote from a 1989 film, and it was about a ghost baseball team, not customers. It survived into startup folklore because it flatters the part of the job founders like most. Building is concrete. You start the day with a broken thing and end it with a working one.
You can see the diff. Distribution gives you none of that. You send twenty messages into silence and have nothing to show a friend at dinner.
So the belief persists because it lets you stay in the room you enjoy. It also gets reinforced by survivorship stories. You hear about the product that blew up from a single tweet and you quietly file it as proof that a good enough thing sells itself.
You do not hear about the thousand equally good things that shipped the same week and sank without a sound, because nobody writes the story of the product nobody saw.
Why "build it and they will come" is false now
There was a narrow window where the lie had some truth to it. When building software was genuinely hard, shipping something real was rare enough to be its own signal. Being able to build the thing was the moat, and a moat gets noticed.
That window is closed. Building got cheap, and I mean categorically cheap, not slightly. A founder with an idea and an AI coding tool ships a working, paying-capable product in a weekend. The barrier that used to thin the herd is gone, so the herd is enormous.
Your product is not worse than it would have been three years ago. It is landing in a feed that now holds ten thousand other things exactly as polished as yours, competing for an amount of attention that did not grow to match.

When anyone can build the thing in a weekend, the finished thing is not the achievement. Getting a stranger to look at it is.
Why isn't anyone buying my SaaS
The first instinct, when the dashboard stays flat, is to blame the product. I rewrote the headline, added the feature someone asked for in a comment, redid the onboarding, and refreshed the numbers hoping they had moved. Sometimes the product really is the problem.
Far more often the honest answer is that eleven people have seen it, and eleven people cannot tell you anything.
You cannot diagnose a product with a sample size that small. Silence from nine visitors is not a verdict, it is a lack of data. Before you touch the build again, you need enough of the right people to have actually looked that their response, or their silence, means something.
Getting them to look is a distribution job. It is the job the lie let you skip, and skipping it is usually the real reason the numbers are flat. I laid out that trap on its own in the distribution you skipped.
Do I need marketing for my SaaS
Yes, and the useful reframe is to stop calling it marketing, which sounds like a department you cannot afford, and call it distribution, which is just the work of getting the product in front of people who have the problem. You do not replace building with it.
You run both at once, from day one, in parallel. The old sequence was build fully, then distribute. The new sequence is build a little, distribute a lot, and let what you hear from real people decide what you build next.
Here is the whole method, and it is deliberately small so you will actually run it.
- Name one person, not a market. Write who it is for in a single sentence you can picture. "A solo SaaS founder who runs their own outbound" beats "startups". If you cannot see the person, you cannot reach them.
- Build the smallest thing that is real. Not the full vision. Enough that a stranger can understand what it does and whether it helps them.
- Find twenty of them a week. Not two thousand. Small and specific keeps distribution from becoming a project you avoid alongside the one you are already avoiding.
- Show it, do not pitch it. Send a short, honest walkthrough aimed at their situation. The actual thing, and why it might help them specifically. No clever copy.
- Let their response steer the build. The people who engage tell you what to make next. Total silence across a batch is also data: the person, the message, or the list was wrong. Adjust and run it again next week.
The point is not the five steps. The point is that building and distributing happen in the same week, forever, instead of one finishing before the other starts.
Where a tool fits, and where it does not
Run that loop by hand first. Keep running it until you have proof that showing the product, specifically and honestly, changes whether people reply. Once you have that proof, one problem is left. Step four does not scale. A real walkthrough aimed at one person takes ten minutes. Twenty of them is your Monday gone.
Two hundred is a quarter you do not have, so the personal walkthrough quietly decays into a template, and the template is the thing that never worked.

For each lead it speaks the opening you recorded, with their name in it, in a copy of your voice, sitting on the footage you already shot, and gives that lead a page of their own with a readout of what they watched.
Then it hands the links back to you to send, because the sending should stay where your replies land.
What it will not do is the part that decides everything. It cannot make a stranger want your product, and it cannot turn a bad list into a good one. All it does is lift the ceiling on one step inside "distribute a lot". The wanting is still on you and the product.

A good product wins once people see it, and getting them to see it is work that runs in parallel with building, from day one. Quality decides whether they stay after they arrive. It has no effect on whether they arrive at all. Both jobs are yours, and only one of them is optional to nobody.
I spent months waiting for a cornfield to fill up. It stayed empty because I was the only one who knew the field existed. The product was fine.
What was missing was the boring, repeatable act of walking outside and telling twenty of the right people, this week and every week after, that the thing was there.
