To get your first ten customers with no audience and no budget, you skip the audience and the ads entirely and reach the buyers one by one: pick a narrow type of person who has the problem you solve, find twenty of them by hand each week, show each one the actual product instead of pitching it, make the next step a single click, and follow up only with the ones who reacted.
You do not need a following, an email list, or ad money. You need a repeatable weekly loop and the patience to run it while it feels slow, because the first ten always feel slow.
Why you do not need an audience or a following to get your first customers
An audience is a distribution shortcut you have not earned yet, and trying to build one first is how founders spend six months making zero sales. Followers, a newsletter, a content engine: these pay off at customer three hundred, not customer three.
For the first ten, the maths is small enough that you can reach every buyer individually. Ten customers might mean two hundred good conversations. Two hundred is a number you can work through by hand in a couple of months, so the audience you would have spent those months building was never the bottleneck.
There is also a quieter reason building an audience feels appealing. It is legible, it looks like progress, and it lets you avoid talking to strangers one at a time. Direct outreach is uncomfortable and unglamorous, which is exactly why it is uncrowded.
Most people will not do it, so the founders who do reach their first customers faster than the ones waiting for a following to arrive.
How do you find the right people with no list
You find them the same way you would find one person to hire, except you do it twenty times a week. Start by writing down who the product is for in a single sentence that names a person, not a market.
"A solo SaaS founder who runs their own outbound and dislikes it" is something you can search for. "Small businesses" is not.
Then go where those people are already visible and identifiable. LinkedIn by role or seniority, people posting about the exact problem you solve, everyone at a company that would obviously need you, or a niche community you can quietly read. You are not buying a list of ten thousand strangers, most of them wrong.
You are building a small list of people you could explain, one by one, why you picked them. If you want the mechanics of doing this without paying for data, I wrote them up in how to find leads without buying a list.
With no audience, your LinkedIn profile is the first thing those twenty people check before they accept or reply. A free LinkedIn profile audit scores it against the exact person you just wrote down, and rewrites your headline for them.
The weekly loop that gets you your first 10 SaaS customers
Here is the whole thing, small enough to run every Monday without dread.
- Pick twenty people, by hand. Not two thousand. Twenty specific humans you can name a reason for. Small keeps it from turning into a project you postpone.
- Show them the product, do not pitch it. Send a short, honest walkthrough of the thing itself aimed at their situation. No clever copy, no manufactured urgency. The actual product, and one line on why it might help them specifically.
- Make the next step a single click. A calendar link, a trial, or a plain reply. Never make a busy stranger work out what you want from them.
- Follow up the warm ones, drop the cold ones. Someone who looked and went quiet is your easiest conversation of the week. Total silence from a whole batch is data about the person, the message, or the list.
- Change one thing, run it again. Same time next week. You are looking for the version of this that gets replies, and you find it by repeating, not by planning.
The first ten customers do not come from a clever campaign. They come from doing an unglamorous thing twenty times a week until it works.
The point is not the five steps. The point is that it repeats without wrecking you. A loop you can stand to run every Monday beats one heroic outreach sprint you do once, get discouraged by, and never touch again. Expect the first few weeks to return mostly nothing.
That is normal, and it is why so few people make it to ten.
Why showing beats pitching when nobody knows you
When you have no audience, you have no borrowed trust, so your message has to carry all of it. A pitch asks a stranger to believe a claim. Showing them the working product lets them judge it themselves, which is a much easier thing to grant a person they have never heard of.
Technical founders are unusually good at this, because explaining the thing they built is the one part of selling that is not a performance. If you freeze at the word "sales", I unpacked why that reflex is misread in founder-led sales when you hate selling.
The short version is that you are not bad at selling, you are bad at pretending, and showing lets you stop pretending.
Where this stops scaling by hand
Step two is where every founder hits the wall, because doing it honestly does not scale. A real, specific walkthrough for one person takes ten minutes. Twenty of them takes your whole Monday, and the version that gets you to ten customers usually means more than twenty.
So "show, do not pitch" quietly rots back into a generic template, which is the exact thing that does not work, and you conclude outreach is broken when what broke was the manual version of it.
This is the same shift I wrote about in building got free, selling didn't: the hard part moved to distribution, and distribution by hand does not scale.
The fix is to separate what has to be personal from what does not. Your walkthrough is the same for everyone, so you record it once. The opening line, the part that names this person's situation, is the only thing that should change from lead to lead.
Doing that split by hand is the exact thing that breaks past twenty people. Removing that ceiling is the tool I build, Personade. It runs the outreach on LinkedIn for you, the invite, the message, and the follow-ups, and stops when someone replies. If your walkthrough is the message, a video add-on on top gives every lead a spoken opening for their situation, so step two keeps working long after the twentieth person.
It will not turn a weak list into a good one, so the call on who is worth writing to stays where it belongs, with you. See how it works.
Common questions
How do you get your first SaaS customers with no audience? By reaching them directly instead of waiting for them to find you. Pick a narrow type of person who has the problem you solve, find twenty of them a week by hand, and show each one your actual product rather than pitching it. Make the next step a single click, follow up only the ones who react, and run the same loop again the following week.
How long does it take to get the first 10 customers this way? Usually a couple of months of consistent weekly outreach, not a couple of weeks. The first few batches often return nothing, which is normal and not a sign the product is wrong. Ten customers can take two hundred or more real conversations, and the founders who reach it are the ones who kept running the loop while it still felt slow.
Should I build an audience or do content first? Not for your first ten customers. Content and audience-building pay off much later, and doing them first is a common way to spend months making no sales. The maths for early customers is small enough to reach every buyer by hand, so direct outreach gets you there faster than any following you could grow in the same stretch of time.
Ten customers is not a marketing problem you solve with a big idea. It is a small, dull, repeatable task done more times than most people are willing to do it, and the fact that it is dull is the reason it stays open to you.
The dull part is also the part worth automating on LinkedIn once the loop is working: Personade is the version of this where the invites and follow-ups run for you, and pricing is $49 a month, 14 days free.
