Loom is a great recorder. Cold outreach is not a recording problem, which is exactly why Loom is a bad tool for it. Reaching a hundred strangers needs three things Loom was never built to do: find the people you are contacting, make a video that is about each of them without you recording each one, and tell you what a specific stranger did with the link. Loom hands you a recording and a view count. For talking to your team or answering one customer, that is everything you need. For cold outreach, it is the wrong shape.
Is Loom good for cold outreach?
For the first ten prospects, Loom feels like a great idea. You record a short walkthrough, you paste the link in an email, and it lands warmer than plain text. The problem is not the first ten.
It is the eleventh through the two-hundredth, where the thing that made the first ten work quietly falls apart.
A cold prospect does not know you. What earns a reply is the video being about them, or at least about their situation, in the first few seconds. On Loom, the only way to make a video about a specific person is to record a new one for that person. That is fine at ten.
At a hundred it is a full day of talking to your webcam, and by prospect forty you are recording a generic clip and telling yourself it counts as personal. The recipient can tell.
What Loom is genuinely great at
The criticism only makes sense if you grant what Loom does well, so I want to be fair. It is the best tool I know for async video inside a company.
Explaining a bug to a teammate, walking a client through a deliverable, replying to one prospect who asked a real question, leaving feedback on a design. Anything where you are talking to someone who already knows who you are and there is exactly one of them.
In all of those cases, one recording for one audience is not a limitation. It is the whole job. The tool matches the task. Cold outreach is the one place where "one recording per audience" turns from a feature into the bottleneck, because the audience is now hundreds of strangers instead of one colleague.
Loom is not a bad outreach tool. It is a good recorder being asked to do a job that starts one recording after the job it was built for ends.
Why one video per prospect doesn't scale
This is the core mismatch, so it is worth being precise. A genuinely personal walkthrough for one prospect takes maybe ten minutes to record and tidy. Twenty of them takes your day. Two hundred takes a quarter you do not have.
The manual version of personal video has a hard ceiling, and everyone hits it in the same place.
What you actually want is to separate the part that has to be personal from the part that does not. Your demo, the substance, is the same for every prospect. Only the opening, the bit that names their company and their situation, needs to change per person. Loom has no concept of that split.
Every video is one indivisible recording, so changing the opening means re-recording the whole thing. That single design fact is why Loom cannot scale personal outreach, and it is not a bug. It is just not what a recorder is for.
Why Loom's view counts aren't enough for sales outreach
Loom will tell you a video was viewed. For outreach, that is not enough to act on. When you are running your own pipeline, the questions you need answered are narrower: did this specific named lead open it, how far did they watch, did they click through to book.
A view count aggregated across everyone who touched a link cannot tell you which prospect to follow up on Monday.
Real outreach analytics are per lead, not per video, and the difference is where cold outreach is actually won. Someone who watched three quarters of your video and went quiet is the easiest conversation you will have that week. Someone who never opened it is telling you the message or the list was wrong.
Loom's numbers do not let you tell those two people apart, so you follow up blind or not at all.
What a Loom alternative for sales actually needs
Line up what cold outreach needs against what Loom provides and the gap is not about video quality. Loom's video is fine. The gap is everything around the video.
| Cold outreach needs | Loom | What the job requires |
|---|---|---|
| Find the people to contact | Not its job | Built-in lead sourcing |
| A personal video per lead | One recording per lead, by hand | Record once, personalize per lead |
| A page built around the lead | A generic share link | A page with their name and company |
| Per-lead behavior, not totals | Aggregate view count | Opened, watched, clicked, per lead |
| Your reputation stays yours | Fine, you paste each link by hand | Sent from your own account, paced, stops on reply |
The last row is the one thing Loom quietly gets right for outreach: the link goes out from your own account, under your own name. Any replacement worth using should keep that, and if it does the sending for you, it should do it carefully.
Where Personade fits
Before Personade existed I tried to run outbound on Loom, because it was the tool already open on my screen. So the four gaps above are not theoretical to me. I hit each one in the order this post walked through them, and Personade is built to close exactly those four.
Personade is LinkedIn outreach automation. It finds the leads, which Loom never set out to do: a LinkedIn or Sales Navigator search, the people who reacted to or commented on a post, an event, a group, your network, or a CSV. Then it runs the campaign from your LinkedIn account, the connection request, the message, and the follow-ups, and stops the moment someone replies.
The recording ceiling is where the video add-on comes in, set up with you on a call. You record one video, about a minute. We write the opening for each lead and make their version with your face and your voice, so the substance never changes while the first few seconds are addressed to that specific person.
That removes the one-recording-per-prospect ceiling without turning your week into a day at the webcam. The videos go out inside your campaigns, replies land in one inbox, and you see who watched.
It sends carefully, not in bulk. A new account warms up over three weeks, and each account connects from one fixed residential IP, always the same one. And it never swaps you for a synthetic presenter. The face and the demo are yours. Only the opening line moves.
If you want the point-by-point version, I put it on the personalised video page, and the wider case for personal video outbound is in the complete guide to personalized video outreach.
Common questions
Can I use Loom for cold outreach? You can, and it holds up for your first handful of prospects. It breaks at volume for three reasons: staying personal means a fresh recording per person, there is no way to find leads inside it, and the view counts are aggregated rather than tied to a named lead. For occasional one-to-one video it is excellent. For a real pipeline the recording time becomes your ceiling.
Is Loom good for sales? For warm sales it is genuinely useful. Answering a known prospect's question, walking a client through a proposal, following up after a call are all one video for one person who already knows you, which is what Loom does best. Cold outreach is the opposite case: many strangers, each needing a video about them, which on Loom means re-recording every single time.
What is the best Loom alternative for prospecting? Look for the four things Loom lacks. It should record your demo once and swap only the opening per lead, give each lead their own page instead of a shared link, report per-lead behavior rather than a single view total, and send from your own account, carefully, so your reputation stays intact. Those four together are what make an outreach tool rather than a recorder.
Loom is a good tool. It is just a tool for the moment after someone already knows who you are, and cold outreach is the moment before that. Use Loom for your team and your warm replies.
When the job is getting a hundred strangers to watch something made for them, the recorder is not the thing that is missing.
