Your Product Hunt launch lasted a day. Selling lasts the other three hundred and sixty-four. A spike followed by silence is not a failure, it is the normal shape of a launch. The traffic arrived because the platform pointed a crowd at you for twenty-four hours, and then it pointed them at someone else.
Getting customers after Product Hunt has almost nothing to do with launching better next time. It is about turning that one loud day into something you do on purpose every week, putting the product in front of the right people when nobody is handing you a spike for free.
Why did my launch spike then go silent
Because a launch is a distribution channel that lasts one day and then closes. For twenty-four hours you were on a page that thousands of people check out of habit, so you got their attention on loan. The loan came due at midnight. Nothing about your product changed between the spike and the silence.
What changed is that the thing sending you strangers switched off, and you had not built anything to replace it.
Most founders read the flat line as a verdict on the product. It usually is not. It is a verdict on the fact that the only distribution you had was rented for a day, and rent runs out.
Did my launch flop, or is this just what launches do
This is mostly just what launches do. The stories you remember, the ones where a launch turned into a business overnight, are the rare cases that get retold precisely because they are rare. The common case is a good product, a decent launch, a few hundred visitors, a handful of signups, and then quiet.
That is not a flop. That is the median.
The mistake is treating the launch as the finish line, as the moment the product goes out and the market decides. A launch is not a verdict. It is one day of sample data, from an audience that came because a website told them to, not because they had the problem you solve.
A few hundred curious browsers cannot tell you whether the product works. They can only tell you the launch worked, for a day, which you already knew.
A launch is an event you attend once. Distribution is a habit you keep. The founders who get customers are the ones who noticed the difference the next morning.
How do I get customers after Product Hunt
You do not need to launch again. You need to take the one skill a launch teaches you, putting the product in front of strangers, and do it deliberately every week without a platform doing it for you. Here is the whole motion.
- Mine the launch for names, not applause. Everyone who upvoted, commented, or signed up told you something real about who this is for. Write down the pattern. Not "developers", but "solo founders who commented that they hate cold email". That sentence is your target from now on.
- Find twenty of those people a week. Not two thousand. Small and specific keeps this from becoming a project you avoid. LinkedIn by role, people posting about the problem, a target company's team, a list you already have.
- Show the thing, do not pitch it. Send a short, honest walkthrough of what you built, aimed at their situation. You are a builder, so lead with your strength. Not clever copy. The actual thing, and why it might help them specifically.
- Make the next step one click. A calendar link, a trial, a plain reply. Never make a busy stranger work out what you want from them.
- Follow up the ones who engaged, drop the ones who did not. Someone who watched and went quiet is your easiest next conversation. Total silence across the batch is data about the person, the message, or the list. Adjust and run it again next week.
The point is not the five steps. The point is that this repeats. A launch happens once and then it is gone.
A loop you can stand to run every Monday is the thing that was actually going to get you customers all along, and it works in the fifty weeks a year when you are not launching anything.
If nobody signed up at all and you are starting from zero, the earlier problem is worth reading first: how to get your first customers with no audience. And if the launch flatline made you wonder why getting seen got this hard in the first place, that is its own shift, covered in building got free, selling didn't.
Where a tool fits, and where it does not
Step three is where the loop dies, and it dies for a boring reason. A real walkthrough aimed at one person takes ten minutes. Twenty of those is your Monday gone. The first week you find the energy for it.
By week three you are copying last week's message and swapping the name, which is the generic pitch you swore you would not send, and the loop quietly stops being a loop.
So the real question is not whether you can do a personal walkthrough. It is whether you can still do one in week twelve. That gap is why I built Personade.
It connects your LinkedIn account and runs the outreach for you: the connection request, the message, and the follow-ups, and it stops the moment someone replies. It finds the twenty for you too, from a LinkedIn or Sales Navigator search, a post, an event, or a group, so sourcing is not a second chore.
If a walkthrough is your message, there is a video add-on on top, set up with you on a call. The walkthrough is the same for everyone, so you record it once, about a minute. Each lead gets their own version with the opening made for them, in your face and your voice, and you see who watched.
What it will not do is choose who deserves your message. You still pick the people and write what you say, which keeps the outreach going out under your name where it belongs. It also will not make you sound like anyone but you, because the face and the product on screen are yours.
All it does is make week twelve cost about what week one did, and that is the only thing that decides whether "do outreach every week" is a real plan or a sentence you said once in January. If that is your wall, see how it works.
Common questions
Why did my Product Hunt launch flop after the first day? It probably did not flop. A launch is one day of rented attention, and the spike ending is the platform switching off, not the market rejecting you. A quiet next morning is the normal shape, not a signal that your product is bad. What you are missing is a distribution habit to replace the borrowed traffic, and that gets built in the weeks after the launch, never on launch day itself.
How do I get customers after Product Hunt? Turn the launch into a weekly outreach loop. Take the pattern of who responded, find twenty similar people each week, send each one a short honest walkthrough aimed at their actual situation, make the next step a single click, and follow up only the people who engaged. Then run it again the following week. Small, consistent outreach beats one launch spike over any timeframe that matters.
Should I just launch again to get another spike? Rarely worth it as your main plan. A second launch is another single day of borrowed attention with the same drop-off waiting at midnight, and the relaunch spike fades exactly like the first one did. Save relaunches for genuine reasons, like a major new version. Your ordinary weeks are better spent on a habit that brings people in during the fifty you are not launching anything.
The launch was never going to be the thing that got you customers. It was one loud day that showed you a version of what steady distribution feels like, then took it away by morning. The founders who make it are not the ones who launch best.
They are the ones who, on day two, quietly start doing by hand what the platform did for them for free, and keep doing it long after everyone else has moved on to planning their next launch.
